NEW YORK (WABC) -- Opa!
That's the sound of Greek pride filling the
air in Manhattan on Sunday as thousands
celebrated their heritage.
A sea of blue and white flags waved
proudly along Fifth Avenue as revelers
marched in the 73rd annual Greek
Independence Day parade. Music and
merriment was everywhere from 64th to
79th street in Midtown.
The theme of this year's parade: Visit
Greece; the place where mythology says
Greek Gods like Zeus once stood high
atop Mount Olympus.
The 73rd Greek Independence Day Parade
took place today on New York’s Fifth Avenue,
Between 64th and 79th Streets. This is the
largest Greek parade in the country and the
theme for this year was “Visit Greece”.
The NYC Gerek parade is the largest Greek
parade in the country and this year's theme was
based on “Visit Greece”.
Some of the grand marshals included Dr.
William Tenet, noted heart surgeon and brother
of George Tenet, The Congressional Hellenic
Caucus, rep. by the Caucus Chairs, Congress
Members Gus Bilirakis & Carolyn Maloney and
Mr. Demetris Kastanas, founder and President
of NGTV.
The parade welcomed the Elite Presidential
Guard of Greece, the iconic, world famous
Ceremonial unit whose traditional uniform
includes a unique kilt-like fustanella. Also on
floats, were Children of all ages, mimicking the
Presidential Guard, waving at the crowd. High
schools, colleges and universities from N.Y,
Connecticut, and other states also made an
appearance, with the help of several bands,
and Bank Floats. Finally came the Evzones,
known for their valour, who have become a
popular image especially among parade-goers..
