"As one looks back over the twenty-five or twenty-six centuries of Greek literature, one is
astonished, not merely at the vast productivity, but even more at the extraordinary unity and
tenacity of a people, century after century, shouldering an ever increasing weight of tradition, and
never sinking under it to become merely repetitive or imitative, but always molding it anew. In every
period one finds the same self-awareness, the same readiness to meet the ever changing
challenge of self-expression. The literature of Greece is like a vast spectrum, whose colors
proceed from the refraction of a single gleam of light. The single gleam is the heroic spirit, which
has remained the same, while the colors shift and change with changing circumstances."
